BIOGRAPHY

Josep Maria Sert i Badia, Barcelona 1874-1945- developed pictorial works during the first half of the 20th century, for which he became known as the best mural painter of the 30s. The international scope of the painter is evident in the fact that his canvases are found in both Europe and America, from the Rockefeller Centre in New York to the United Nations Building in Geneva.

Closely connected with Catalan modernism, Sert lived in Paris where he came in touch with the most advanced currents of the time. He maintained his relationship with Catalonia through his sisters and especially through the bond that he established with the city of Vic, where he decorated the Cathedral on the order of his friend and protector Torras i Bages. The different completions of these works occupied decisive stages in his artistic life and, therefore, it is not at all audacious to say that Sert developed as a painter during the decorative project in Vic.

Currently, Vic offers visits to three important collections: pieces from the two initial decorations of the Cathedral in the Chapel de la Pietat; the paintings from the Waldorf Astoria hotel in New York in the “Sucre” building and the impressive decoration of the Cathedral. All in all, the widest most complete vision of the painter that can be seen anywhere in the world.
